Building a Vibrant Jewish Future

One community, across every generation.

Nurturing Jewish life at every stage, from a child's first Shabbat to a lifetime of leadership.

Through connection, learning, and leadership, Jewish Federation of San Diego helps every generation find its place in Jewish life. We invest at every stage, so that children, teens, young adults, and the leaders who guide our community all have a reason to show up and a way in.

Why This Matters

A strong Jewish future is built at every age, not handed down in a single moment.

Jewish life takes root early and deepens over a lifetime. It begins with a child's first Jewish book and a family's first Shabbat, grows through the teenagers finding their voice and the young adults searching for their place, and matures in the volunteers and leaders who carry the community forward. Strengthen one stage and neglect another, and the whole chain weakens. Federation exists to invest in every link, building the connection, learning, and leadership that let Jewish life in San Diego grow stronger across generations.

We don't guess at what our community needs. Through PULSE, our community-wide listening effort, organizations and community leaders across San Diego told us something clear: people are looking for meaningful connection and for more ways to be part of Jewish life together. That insight runs through everything on this page. It shaped the Belonging Initiative, and it guides how we show up at every stage, so that whatever chapter someone is in, there is a place for them and a way in.

The Belonging Initiative

Being seen, valued, and heard is where it starts.

In our 2022 Blueprint for Our Future study, just 11% of San Diego Jews said they feel a great deal of belonging to our local Jewish community. The most common barrier wasn't cost or distance. It was not knowing anyone.

The Belonging Initiative is Federation's response. We define belonging as what people feel when they're seen, valued, and heard, and when they share a sense of purpose with one another. It's built through relationships and intentional design, and no single institution can deliver it alone. So we work alongside synagogues, schools, agencies, and grassroots communities across San Diego to build it together.

Our Work at Every Age

Every stage of Jewish life, supported

People connect with Jewish life differently as they grow, and the opportunities available to them need to grow too. Federation invests in experiences, organizations and community infrastructure that help people build relationships, explore Jewish life and find meaningful ways to participate.

Children & Families

Early Jewish experiences can shape how children and families connect to Jewish life for years to come. Federation helps families access Jewish books, camp experiences and other opportunities to begin building those connections.

Teens

The teenage years offer important opportunities to explore Jewish identity, develop leadership skills and build relationships with Jewish peers. Federation creates and supports experiences ranging from global exchange and peer education to immersive travel, with financial support that helps make participation more accessible.

Young Adults

For many people, the years after college bring fewer built-in opportunities for Jewish connection. New jobs, new cities and changing relationships can make it harder to find community, even for those who want it.

That is one reason Federation created Mosaic, a peer-led community designed with and for Jewish young adults ages 25–40. Federation also supports longer-term Israel experiences through Masa subsidies and connects emerging leaders with National Young Leadership Cabinet.

Leaders

Strong communities need people prepared to lead them. Federation brings together volunteer and professional leaders from across Jewish San Diego to learn from one another, tackle shared challenges and strengthen the organizations and networks our community relies on.

Through leadership development and community-wide initiatives like Blueprint: The San Diego Jewish Community Forum, we are investing in the people who will guide Jewish San Diego forward.
