On May 19, Jewish Federation of San Diego celebrated the graduation of the fifth cohort of the Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership Institute (PFWLI), honoring a group of women who spent the past several months learning, growing, and leading together.

Through mentorship, Jewish learning, and meaningful dialogue, participants strengthened not only their leadership skills, but also their connection to one another and the broader Jewish community. The evening reflected the depth of the relationships built throughout the program and the shared commitment each graduate brings to Jewish communal life.

Continuing Pauline Foster’s Legacy

Named in memory of Pauline Foster z”l, the institute carries forward her enduring commitment to women’s leadership, philanthropy, and Jewish community-building. Through PFWLI, Jewish women from diverse backgrounds come together to deepen their leadership skills while exploring how Jewish values can guide and strengthen their impact.

Throughout the program, cohort members engaged in conversations around responsibility, purpose, collaboration, and community. The experience encouraged participants to reflect on the kind of leaders they hope to become, both within Jewish spaces and beyond.

Growth Through Connection

While each participant entered the program with different experiences and perspectives, the cohort quickly became a source of support, learning, and inspiration for one another. Through shared conversations and experiences, participants explored leadership not only as a position, but as a way of showing up for community with intention and care.

A meaningful part of the experience included a shared weekend in Mexico City, where cohort members deepened their relationships while exploring global Jewish peoplehood, culture, and community together. The trip created space for reflection and connection that extended far beyond the regular programming.

“I think my deepest purpose as a leader is to facilitate meaningful conversations and moments for people,” said participant Lisa Motenko. “I care deeply about the continuity of Jewish peoplehood, and the value Judaism brings to individuals and to the world.”

Looking Ahead

As this year’s cohort graduates from PFWLI, they move forward with strengthened relationships, renewed confidence, and a deeper connection to Jewish communal leadership. Whether through philanthropy, advocacy, professional leadership, or volunteer service, each graduate carries forward a commitment to helping shape a vibrant and inclusive Jewish future.

“I hope to build something that endures beyond me: a model, a culture, and a network of people who are committed to learning through play, reflection, and action, and who continue to adapt and grow in ways that respond to the needs of their communities,” said participant Dina Buchbinder.

As one cohort concludes its journey, another will soon begin. Applications and nominations for our 2026-2027 Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership Institute cohort will open soon.
