The 2016 Yom Hazikaron ceremony will take place on Tuesday evening, May 10th at Congregation Beth Israel. This somber ceremony is held to honor and remember those who lost their lives fighting for the State of Israel, and as victims of terror attacks.
Although we commemorate all soldiers and victims of terror that fell in the struggle for Israel’s independence and continued existence, this past year was a particularly difficult one for Israel. As terror attacks against Jews and Israelis have recently escalated and claimed many lives, victims of terror will be a particular focus for this year’s ceremony.
It is a long-standing tradition of the San Diego Yom Hazikaron ceremony that local community members who have lost a close family member share a story and light a memorial candle. The Yom Hazikaron committee invites all who have a personal connection to a fallen soldier or victim of terror to participate in this year’s ceremony by sharing their story, lighting a memorial candle, or sharing a written piece or song related to their loved one (Hebrew or English welcome). By participating in the ceremony, community members will help to honor the memory of their loved ones, and help our community to stronger together.
If you are interested in participating in our Yom Hazikaron ceremony this year, or have lost a close family member that you would like to honor in this year’s ceremony, please contact Nicole Patolai at nicolep@jewishfederationsandiego.org, or at 858.737.7136.
