Developing Leaders at Jewish Camp

By Brenda Silvers, Federation Camping Coordinator

Jewish summer camp is a magical setting, infused with Jewish values and culture. This immersive environment connects children with their self-worth and inspires them to build a strong life changing connections with their Jewish peers.

Jacob’s face lights up with a big smile when he recalls his first overnight camp experience at Camp JCA Shalom when he was only 8 years old.

His parents are so pleased with the wonderful connections and personal growth that happened through his camp experience and tell us Jacob will be a camp counselor this coming summer.

“JCA helped him develop leadership, life skills,” said Itamar, Jacob’s father. “We believe he now has a stronger connection to his Jewish friends in our community and a love for Israel.”

Jacob, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and has learning challenges found camp to be the most welcoming and accepting place.

“Camp was amazing and I’ve made many new friends,” says 12-year-old camper, Eitan.  After this incredible experience he went back for fall and winter camp, and is now signed up again for next summer.  “We are so grateful for Brenda Silvers at the Jewish Federation and all the help we received from her and their One Happy Camper Program!” noted Eitan’s mom, Sheila.

We know the transformative value of Jewish Camp. Your Federation has made a long-lasting commitment to make Jewish camping more accessible to families, by informing families about camp options and providing grants to campers through its One Happy Camper program

This summer over 85 campers will join the thousands of others before them who attended Jewish camps with Federation’s support. Among the many Jewish camps across the country, we have strong and longstanding partnerships with camps across southern California.
