National Young Leaders Visit Jewish Communities in Morocco and Spain

The Jewish Federations of North America’s National Young Leadership Cabinet is the premier leadership and philanthropic program of Jewish Federations of North America. It is a cadre of some of the brightest, most generous, and most exciting young leaders in North America, and San Diego has a strong cohort of 7. The program is designed for dedicated women and men, ages 30 to 45, from across the U.S. and Canada who are deeply committed to building a strong, vibrant future for Jewish communities around the world.

San Diego Cabinet members, Debbie Maizel, Jonathan Aires, Eduardo Decias, Tal Moore, David Bramzon, and Kira Finkenberg recently returned from an annual study mission to Morocco and Spain. The trip, which highlighted the special relationship both countries have with the Jewish people, also helped the group understand the importance of supporting vibrant Jewish communities throughout the globe. One of the Moroccan port cites, for example, is home to only 18 Jews and Jewish Federation is there --- ensuring they have access to kosher food, medical care, and housing.

In Spain, Federation supports many programs and initiatives – among them a day school which serves 300 students. The group visited the school and joined the students for an ‘assembly’ on the basketball court to welcome Shabbat with songs, challah, candles, and grape juice. Only Cabinet could pack-in two weeks of activity in just three (very full!) days in Spain! They covered 2,000 years in less than 36 hours!

We look forward to welcoming our Chevre home with new skills and new energy to share their stories and serve as global ambassadors for Federation.
