On Sunday, September 23rd, Little Mensches celebrated 4 years of successful programming for our community! The children put together “necessity kits” for the homeless containing items such as socks, granola bars, antibacterial wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, as well as cards containing information about where to get services in the area. Little Mensches has touched the lives of hundreds of San Diego families through their monthly activities.
Little Mensches aims to provide fun, engaging, and enriching opportunities for children between the ages of 4 and 8 to give back to their community. The goal is to Make the World Better One Mitzvah at a Time by allowing “giving back” to become a regular part of these children’s lives.
The program has been chaired since inception by Jessica Fink. When Fink’s oldest son was 5 years old, she began looking for some type of charitable project the two of them could participate in on a regular basis. After calling several organizations, however, she discovered that most of the available opportunities were aimed at older children, and/or required substantial blocks of time and were not appropriate for a 5-year-old boy.
Jessica then reached out to Judy Nemzer and Vivien Dean, of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, to see if they knew of any mitzvah opportunities for the age group. When Judy and Vivien could not think of any programs, they suggested that the three women start such a program together. Thus, Little Mensches was born.
Do you have a child between 4 and 8? We hope you can join us for our next event on Sunday, October 21st from 1:00-2:30pm at the JCC, where we will be teaching our children about respecting elders in the community. We will be making cards and other crafts for local seniors, and then will join in a Bingo tournament and sing-a-long with seniors in the community. (If your child has a grandparent or great-grandparent in the community who might want to join us, please let us know!)
Please RSVP to LittleMensches@lfjcc.org.
Federation works in partnership with the Lawrence Family JCC, Jacobs Family Campus, on our Young Families Initiative in order to build a welcoming community for all families in San Diego.
