In 2013, he was appointed by President Obama to lead the United States Department of Energy. Secretary Moniz spent much of this year negotiating with Iran's nuclear experts to achieve the deal announced in Vienna. At the Department of Energy he is responsible for overseeing and maintaining America's nuclear deterrent, supporting nuclear security and nonproliferation efforts around the world, and working with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the international organization that is responsible for ensuring Iran's compliance with the nuclear agreement.
