JOIN US ON THE 2ND ANNUAL BIKE ISRAEL 2010 – RIDE FOR SHA’AR HANEGEV – A MEMORABLE 8-DAY JOURNEY THROUGH ISRAEL |
Bike Israel 2010 Continues the Journey – Raising Funds for Sha’ar HaNegevThousands of students will spend a 6-year term at the Regional High School and Educational Village, a term which will be pivotal to their academic success and emotional well-being. By investing in this center, you will be making a difference not only in the lives of these students, but also in the long-term viability of this region and the State of Israel. Our friends in the Sha’ar HaNegev region of Israel are still under constant threat of attack by Kassam missiles from the Gaza strip. It seems all too often that we read about a child losing a limb or a father being killed from these senseless attacks. Just as bad, if not worse, is the psychological impact of having only seconds to run for shelter after hearing the Tzeva Adom (red alert) signal. We cannot imagine what it must be like to live where missile attacks are a part of every day life. Israeli citizens living in the Sha’ar HaNegev Region are facing an existential challenge whose consequences are paramount to the future of Israel. Violently pushed further into the “periphery”, they live in a continuous state of peril that has entirely blocked them from the prosperity felt in other parts of the country. The widening social and economic gap threatens the very backbone of Israeli society. The only response to this reality is a determined effort to strengthen and support our sister community of Sha’ar HaNegev through these trying times. The Sha’ar HaNegev Educational Village development project (SHEV) is one of the foremost opportunities available today to help our friends in Israel where help is most urgently needed. This new facility will be built to serve 1,800 students in buildings specially designed and engineered to protect them against these daily missile attacks. Restoring a sense of security is key to maintaining a nurturing educational environment and to motivate families to live, thrive, and stay in the region. Just like us, the education of their children is their highest priority. UJF is committed to raising $1,000,000 to make the Arts Center, which is housed in the Community Center, a reality for thousands of students and the surrounding community. Through your philanthropy, students will be able to expand their horizons in creative arts, fashion design, dance, music and theatre. The ride will cover about fifty miles per day, and include stimulating programming each day, along and after each day’s ride. The ride will be fully supported by some of the finest guides in Israel, quality overnight accommodations, all group meals, bicycle mechanical support, first aid and security. And, if you can’t or don’t want to finish a day’s ride while in Israel, a “sag wagon” will assist you. Aharale Rothstein, Principal of the Sha’ar HaNegev High School, may have said it best on his recent visit to San Diego: “It is one thing to disengage from Gaza and territories occupied post 1967, but it is quite another, with dire consequences for the entire state, if Israel is to abandon communities that are within the borders established by the United Nations in 1947. To close the school would be to close the area, and to close the area would be to close Israel.” If you are ready to make a difference, please contact the Bike Israel 2010 – Ride for Sha’ar HaNegev coordinators for more information.
